Things to do in Morwell

Morwell is located in Central Gippsland in a region known as the Latrobe Valley, which is centred on the three major towns of Moe, Morwell and Traralgon. The Latrobe Valley is nestled between the Strzelecki Ranges and the Great Dividing Range in Victoria, Australia.

Latrobe Valley Power IndustryMorwell is at the heart of Victoria's brown coal mining and electricity production industry with the Latrobe Valley Power Industry supplying more than 85% of the state's electricity. Powerworks Energy Technology and Visitors Centre in Morwell offers information, interactive displays and educational programs including tours of local power stations and mines.

Morwell is also home to one of the regions major cultural facilities, the Latrobe Regional Gallery, where some outstanding Australian artworks by local and national artists can be seen.

Morwell Centennial Rose GardenThe Morwell Centennial Rose Garden is one of the finest in the southern hemisphere with some 3,000 bushes, including more than 260 varieties in 100 beds, planted in a two and a half acre garden.

In the south-eastern section of the Strzelecki Ranges, Tarra Bulga National Park is one of only four major areas of cool temperate rainforest in Victoria. The park features lush, moist gullies, giant mountain ash trees and beautiful tree ferns.

Tarra Bulga National ParkMorwell National Park, just 16 kilometres south of Morwell in the foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges, is a lovely place for a picnic. Officially opened in 1967, the park has nature walks offering insight into the local flora and fauna including 43 species of native orchid and the rarely seen powerful owl.

Visitors to the area can also enjoy a variety of water activities at Hazelwood Pondage with warm water year round. Gippsland is also the home to several wineries.

Dicover Historic Walhalla, once one of Australia's richest towns following the discovery of gold in the area in 1863. Local attractions include a ride on the restored Walhalla Goldfields Railway, the Corner Stores Museum, the Old Fire Station, the Bank Vault, local Post and Telegraph Office, St Johns Church and the historic hillside cemetery.

Explore the old mines on a guided tour of the Long Tunnel Extended or try your luck gold panning in Stringers Creek.

Morwell National Park VictoriaFor bushwalkers, Walhalla is the starting point of the Australian Alps Walking Track.

Gippsland has a wealth of golf courses to suit both the serious and occasional golfer. For shopping, Gippsland has the largest number of farmers' markets in Victoria, where you can buy fresh produce direct from the growers. Yarragon Village shops and galleries offer an array of arts, crafts, textiles, books and antiques.
